RETIREMENT? NOW WHAT?
I am speaking to seniors and future retirees as a CSA, Certified Senior Advisor and tax accountant regarding taking a hobby during retirement.
Why is it important to consider a hobby at and during your retirement years? There are many reasons I believe that keeping productive extends your quality of life. Some of these are:
- Increased self-esteem
- Meet and communicate with others
- Physical
- Creativity
- Learn from others
- Social
- Volunteering
When did you think about retirement? The day you left your job? Your retirement notice?
Do you have a plan? A plan that’s realistic. Realistic in relation to time, projects, and monetary concerns.
One of the best ways to adjust for and during retirement is years before that date of liberation. This takes personal analysis and soul searching. Include family members and get their input.
The time before you decide on a hobby and become a member of this exclusive community, take notes about yourself regarding the following:
- Likes
- Experiences
- Talents
- Space available
- Time available
- Monetary considerations
- Family participation

Speak with an accountant about the tax benefits and disadvantages of establishing a hobby. The other option is creating your hobby as a business. Again, there are many IRS rules associated with running a business that are different from a hobby.
